I started 'dinghying' in a Mirror when I was twelve, sailing for a couple of weeks each summer. Upgraded a few years ago to the Laser which i started sailing regularly at Brighton Sailing Club last year. Have started sailing a Laser 4000 this winter. Did the Club Class at the Marina in April '07 and Day Skipper course at Hove Lagoon and have since crewed on Jellina (J113) at Cowes Week and at the J Cup in Plymouth!

This is my second year running the club, and only really my third year of sailing. I first started at the beginning of my first year in September '05, learning through this Club and at Brighton Marina Yacht Club's Club Class (shameless plug...). Loved every minute of it and really just did everything I could- word from the wise: volunteering to do the nasty deliveries and showing up every Sunday during the winter goes a long way to getting you a spot on a decent boat...
Since then, i've done RORC and JOG races, cross-Channel and Irish Sea races, Cowes Week, the Fastnet, two student nationals and a few other bits and bobs on various boats, and am potentially looking to take a boat to Malta in Summer '08, just to give you all something to work towards...
I don't really know why I love sailing like I do - something to do with being outdoors, and always being able to do better than you are doing - the learning curve never really stops.
I'm at Brighton in my third year, on the mPharm course.

VICE COMMODORE
Liz Leek   large product photo

Hello there!!! I’m Liz and I am the other rear commodore alongside Tara. I started sailing dinghies when I was a wee nipper on quarry lakes! Failing any ability in my understanding at that point I got kickstarted back into action when I started sailing yachts a little bit later. Since that I have done some club racing, and just sailing as my hobby. I am now an instructor and have been working in the UK all summer teaching. I think that the club will be great for those with a mere interest in sailing wanting to poke their nose in to those who have lived and breathed it most of their lives……

VICE COMMODORE
Tara Freeley   large product photo

Hi, I’m Tara. I am one of the rear commodores of Brighton and Sussex University Sailing Club. I started sailing dinghies as a kid in Dublin, and since then I’ve worked on and off as a sailing instructor. I hope that this club will give anybody interested in sailing the opportunity to give it a go! We hope to get some introductory and slightly more advanced lessons going once the term has started, so if you are keen, get in touch with us!

Sailing for me has been primarily a means of travel. As a wee child I did day trips on a 36ft trintella around Europe - England, Wales, France, Southern Ireland. More recently I've done 2 transatlantic crossings and cruised (leisurely sailing) through the Canaries, Caribbean, Bahamas and to the Azores. I have also been a deck hand at the famous Cowes regatta off the Isle of Wight. This Summer I have been exploring the east coast of America and Nova Scotia. There are plans in the woodwork to go test the Pacific after Uni which I hope will materialize. To keep practiced and test myself alittle! I race with the guys at Brighton Marina on Sunday mornings mostly on Jellina a J133 and with the brightsex sailing lot in student nationals and such.

TREASURER
Mike Harrison   large product photo

Hi my name’s Mike and I’m treasurer for this year.  That means that I get to play with lots of money and spend it!  Although sadly not on me L although at least some of it goes on shiny new toys for our boats.  I’m a third year medical student who has been sailing dinghy’s since I was 6.  I started out in the ultimate floating bathtub – optimist’s – and then move on to toppers (where I made a habit of breaking things; masts, boats… thankfully no people) lasers and finally the quite indestructible dart 16.  The best combination of speed and sheer plastic bouncy-ness I have ever sailed.  I have taught sailing on several camps with Columbus Fellowship and I’m presently angling to get a play around on an asymmetric.  In my spare time away from sailing (shock, horror!) I play squash, cycle and wind up doing charity work in countries that seem to go without power or running water most of the time.  Please do get into touch if you have any queries.

HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER
Nicki Linscott   large product photo

Growing up on an island where there isn’t much to do meant that sailing played a huge part in my life from early on. I started off when I was 6 on the unsinkable optimists and from there sailed on pretty much anything I could get my hands on. In previous years I’ve been in a number of competitions and regattas, including the impala nationals, managing to perfect the fine art of sailing with a hangover and not be sick!

As one of the more unlucky (clumsy!) sailors around, being involved in the health and safety side of the club is probably going to be quite entertaining. Previously managing to aid the sinking of a brig during a regatta as well as promoting the Brightsex sailing club at the student nationals by falling overboard, I feel that my expert hands-on experience will be to the benefit everyone’s safety.
